TIMETOAST
This Sunday is St. Patrick's Day. With the 6th grade students I have prepared an activity related to this day. The learning objectives of this activity are:
To get to know the foreign culture through the knowledge of the celebration of St. Patrick's Day.
To understand written texts related to St. Patrick's Day according to their level.
Work in pairs to create a product.
Create a timeline of St. Patrick's life with the TImetoast application.
There are many advantages to using Timetoast with my students. Among them, the motivation of the students to use digital tools. Also to develop the digital competence of the students. Sequencing real events in a timeline, i.e. transferring information from a text to a timeline. Create a very visual product which helps students to acquire information in a simpler way.
The steps I have followed to carry out this activity are:
Brainstorming about what they know about this celebration.
Creating working groups, in this case pairs and trios.
Reading different texts related to this celebration.
Make a draft where they include five facts about the life of St. Patrick.
Create an account in Timetoast.
Create a timeline with this tool.
Share the link to my email.
Some of the problems I have had in carrying out this activity have been that some students have not brought their computers to school. The solution was to go to the computers available at the school, but this meant less time to carry out the activity. On the other hand, as the application is in English, many students found it difficult to carry out the activity. The solution I proposed was that the students who were finishing the activity could explain to the rest of the students how to use the tool.
In general, the students liked doing this activity, as it was a challenge for them and it was something different.
If I were to do this activity again, I would allow more time to do it, as some students did not have time to finish the activity. On the other hand, next time I would upload a video tutorial about the application. I explained how to use it in class, but if you have the video you can refer to it whenever you have a question.
The use of Timestoast has helped me to achieve my objectives for several reasons. The first is that the students have worked on foreign culture through the creation of a St. Patrick's Day timeline. The students have been motivated while using a digital tool. And finally, they have understood the texts offered as they have transferred this information to the timeline. In other words, they have created a final product from the texts.
Some examples of lines created by my students with Timetoast application are the following:
