PIXTON ACTIVITY

To carry out this activity, I have separated the class into groups of three.

As the topic we are working on is travelling, I took the opportunity to include English culture. First of all, we brainstormed about what we know about the UK. Then, I introduced them to the comic that I had made and showed them a short tutorial on how to use the Pixton application. Afterwards, they started to work in groups to search for information by themes, such as food, weather, traditions ..... When they had found the information they wanted to include in the comic, they wrote the sentences in a draft. When all the groups had written the information, they exchanged roles to correct the mistakes. When all the mistakes have been corrected, they organised and planned the creation of the comic. Then, they created the comic including the information and sent me a screenshot. Finally, they have been projected the work done to show it to the rest of the students.

The objectives of this activity are:

  • To learn about English culture.
  • To use digital tools and search for information on the internet.
  • To create short sentences including relevant information.
  • To work in groups to create the final product.

The use of Pixton has helped to achieve these objectives as pupils have explored English culture and have reflected this using this tool. They have also made use of the digital tool by creating written sentences. Finally, they have created a final product, in this case a comic book reflecting the information and working in groups.

Creativity has been encouraged in this activity as the students have created the comic that they have planned. They had total freedom to choose the characters, the settings and the information to be included in the comic.

For this reason, the pupils have enjoyed this activity so much, as they have been free to choose everything. The students really like the use of digital tools in the classroom, and the use of a new application has motivated them a lot. However, what some students liked least about this activity was working in groups. Some students prefer to work individually. As a teacher, I think it is important that students know how to work individually but also in groups, so I am changing the groupings in the work. Maybe, if I had to change something about the activity, it would be that the students choose the type of grouping they prefer, so they feel more comfortable when working.

The students have shared the comics with me and they have been projected to show them to the rest of the class. The groups went out and presented the information included in the comics. During the presentation the students evaluated their peers. Finally, I left some reflection time for the students to evaluate their work.

Below is the comic that I have presented to the students to motivate them, and finally three comics that they have created themselves:
